How to Get Your Business to Show in the Google Local Pack

When you search for something like “dentist near me” or “cafe in Jaipur,” Google often shows a small box near the top of the results with a map and a short list of businesses. That box is the local pack. People also call it the map pack, the local 3-pack or the Google 3 pack. It usually shows three businesses, although what you see can vary by search.

What is the Google local pack?

For a local business, this box is some of the most valuable space on the results page. It sits above or among the regular website results, shows your rating, and gives one-tap options to call or get directions.

If you are not in it, customers who never scroll past it will not see you.

Local pack vs Google Maps vs regular results

These three get confused all the time, so here is the difference.

What it is Where you see it
Local pack A short list of businesses with a map, shown for local-intent searches On the main Google results page
Google Maps results The longer list of businesses inside the Maps app or Maps tab In Google Maps
Regular (organic) results Websites ranked by Google Search Below or around the local pack

They are connected, but they are not the same. Your Google Business Profile is the main way into the local pack and Maps. Your website helps with regular results and can also support your local visibility.

A business can appear in Maps and still miss the local pack, because the pack has very few spots. That is why this topic matters.

How does Google decide who shows in the local pack?

Google says local results are based mainly on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches what the person searched for.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the searcher, or from the location named in the search.
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, which can include reviews and information found around the web.

You cannot control distance. You can work on relevance and prominence. Everything below is about that.

How to get your business into the local pack

1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile

The local pack is built from business profiles, so you need a verified one. If your listing is missing or invisible, start with our guide on why your business is not showing on Google Maps.

2. Choose the right primary category

Your primary category is one of the clearest signals of what you are. Pick the category that best describes your main business, not a service you only offer sometimes. Look at the businesses that already appear in the pack for your search and see which categories they use.

3. Complete your profile

Fill in every section: business description, services or products, hours, phone number, website and attributes. A complete profile gives Google more to match against searches and gives customers more reason to choose you.

4. Build genuine reviews

Reviews affect both how you look to customers and how prominent you appear. Ask real customers to review you, reply to every review, and never buy or fake reviews. Check Google’s current policy on what you can and cannot do.

5. Add real photos

Add clear, real photos of your business, products and work. Update them regularly. They help customers trust you and choose your listing from the pack.

6. Make your website match your profile

Your website should clearly say what you do and where. Use a page for each main service and each main area you serve, with the same business name, address and phone number as your profile. Link to the right page from your profile instead of always pointing to the home page.

7. Keep your business information consistent everywhere

Use the same business name, address and phone number on your website, social profiles and any directories where you are listed. Mixed or outdated details can confuse customers and weaken trust signals.

8. Use relevant terms naturally

Use the words customers use for your services in your description, services list and website. Write for people first. Stuffing keywords, especially into your business name, can break Google’s guidelines and put your profile at risk.

What you cannot control, and what not to do

Distance. If someone searches from far away, a closer competitor may be shown instead. Do not try to fix this with fake addresses or false service areas. That can lead to suspension.

Competition. In a crowded area, only a few businesses can fit in the pack. Winning means being clearly stronger on relevance and prominence than the businesses that are there now.

Search differences. Not every search shows a local pack. It appears mainly when Google thinks the person wants a nearby business.

How to check whether you are in the local pack

Search your main keyword the way a customer would, and look at the businesses shown in the box. Do it from different locations, because the pack changes with where the person is. Keep a record of what you find.

Our guide on how to check your Google Maps ranking explains manual checks, profile data and rank checker tools, and includes a tracking method.

Turn pack visibility into customers

Getting into the pack matters only if people then contact you. Make sure your phone number, hours and photos are correct, and that you respond quickly. Our guide on how to get more customers from Google Maps covers this.

Should you do this yourself or hire help?

Many of these steps are practical and can be done on your own. If your market is competitive, or you have done the basics and are still outside the pack, a specialist can find the gaps faster. See our local SEO services and our comparison of agency vs DIY Google Business Profile optimization.

It is the box of local business results with a map that Google often shows for searches with local intent, such as “service near me.” It usually lists about three businesses.

It depends on your competition, your starting point and how strong your profile is. I cannot promise a timeline, and you should be careful of anyone who does.

Can I pay to be in the local pack?

Paid ad options exist for local businesses, but they work differently from organic local pack results. Check Google Ads’ current options and terms before you spend.
